Stop the Pain & Itch of Bug Bites & Poison Ivy with Plantain!

Plantain is a common weed/herb growing wild in most of the country. Growing happily in your lush green lawn, you've walked on it, mowed over it and tried to eradicate it with all kinds of herbicides but it always comes back somehow, someway...and thank goodness it does!

The magic is in the leaves of this plant that goes way back, hundreds of years ago the American Indians would take a few leaves, chew them up to crush them and release the resins, take it out of their mouth and use it as a poultice and apply it to any area that was bitten by a spider, mosquito, chiggers, or it even works on poison oak and poison ivy.

Wikipedia says "Plantago major is one of the most abundant and widely distributed medicinal crops in the world. A poultice of the leaves can be applied to wounds, stings, and sores in order to facilitate healing and prevent infection. The active chemical constituents are aucubin (an anti-microbial agent), allantoin (which stimulates cellular growth and tissue regeneration), and mucilage (which reduces pain and discomfort). Plantain has astringent properties, and a tea made from the leaves can be ingested to treat diarrhea and soothe raw internal membranes.

Broadleaf plantain is also a highly nutritious wild edible, that is high in calcium and vitamins A, C, and K. The young, tender leaves can be eaten raw, and the older, stringier leaves can be boiled in stews and eaten."

You could chew it up and use it as a poultice for your skin or you could make a tincture, using Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar as a base and some dried plantain, it's an easy recipe and works great!

Take a quart size mason jar and fill it 3/4 full of dried organic plantain, that you have picked and dried yourself or you can purchase the organic dried herb from Mountain Rose Herbs. Add to the jar of herbs the Braggs ACV leaving a half inch of headspace, put the lid on and shake it up to moisten all the plantain, you may need to add more ACV, put it in a dark cabinet for 4 to 6 weeks, giving it a good shake every day. When the 6 weeks are done, strain out the plantain and compost it, take the liquid and put it in a spray bottle, anytime you have an itch, instead of itching spray the plantain ACV on it and within seconds the itch will stop!

I have included plantain that grows everywhere on my land into two of the products that I make, the first is Pain Be Gone and the second is Itchy Styx both have plantain and both will stop itching, inflammation and the pain of bug bites, poison ivy, poison oak and I have one customer who tells me it also works for the itching associated with fibromyalgia!
